Turning Fly Fishing Passion Into Purpose – November 25th
Victorian Fisheries Authority have invited Hilary Hutchens to be the Keynote Speaker at the upcoming Wild Trout Conference in Mansfield and we are hosting Hilary while she is in Melbourne for a one off event.
Hilary started her fly fishing career as a teenaged guide in West Glacier, Montana. She guided through college, then took her journalism degree to Portland, Oregon where she worked as a television news anchor and reporter. She eventually returned to Montana to co-own and operate Outside Media and Trout TV for nearly a decade. Today, she’s still guiding on the Flathead River and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River and owns and runs a fly shop called Lary’s Fly & Supply in her hometown of Columbia Falls, Montana.
She volunteers as a fly fishing instructor for Casting for Recovery, serves as a national board member of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, is a climate activist with Protect Our Winters and is a contributing editor for Fly Fisherman Magazine. She is an ambassador for YETI, Orvis, Costa, Patagonia and Scientific Anglers.
Raised on the doorstep of Glacier National Park, Whitney Milhoan developed a passion for the outdoors early in life. She spent nearly a decade as a fly fishing guide and whitewater rafting guide on Glacier’s Flathead River system, working her way through a degree in Sociology from the University of Montana. For the past decade, Whitney has worked exclusively with non-profit organizations utilizing the outdoors to promote physical and emotional healing. She has been published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Psychosocial Oncology on the topic of outdoor therapy for young adults with cancer.
As a long time volunteer and supporter of Casting
for Recovery, Whitney was thrilled to join CfR as the Executive Director in 2013. She feels fortunate to be able to share her love for the outdoors with those who can truly benefit from its healing properties.
We’ll also be joined by the Mending Casts Inc team, who run the Casting for Recovery programs in Victoria. Hear from John Billing & Jo Dobson on what and when events are run.
The program offers opportunities for women to find inspiration, renew their energy for life and experience the healing gained from networking with others and reconnecting with nature. The program supports breast cancer survivors of all ages, in all stages of recovery, at no cost to participants.
They also provide participants with post-retreat referrals to their nearest fly fishing club so that they can continue to enjoy fly fishing into the future.
This is a great opportunity for all fishing clubs to come along and hear how we can support this wonderful program.
